Amy VIrginia buchanan

Creative Director,
experience designer, and
cultural curator.

Amy has been in New York for nearly a decade, arriving fresh out of clown school and ready to change the world. While her beginnings were deeply rooted in performance art and avant-garde theatre production, through the creation of Spring Street Social Society (former NYC based social club, event series, and integrated marketing firm) she established herself as a Creative Director with a unique voice and perspective. Her work in the world of immersive, experiential design put her on the map and since closing SSSS in 2018, she has served as a freelance consulting Creative Director for some of the world’s leading women’s digital media companies and partnered with global lifestyle brands across all verticals. She has produced work in New York, Los Angeles, Austin, Boston, Seattle, San Francisco, and London.
Amy resides in Fort Greene with a little grey cat named Whenny.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF CREATIVE DIRECTOR

With a diverse background and a singular perspective, Amy is set up to lead cross disciplinary creative teams with ease, efficiency, and inspiration. Her entrepreneurial work as Cofounder and Creative Director of Spring Street Social Society developed and honed her expertise in business development, branded partnerships, integrated marketing, experiential production, and holistic design.

As a leader, amy is meticulous, innovative, dynamic,
genuine, inclusive, thoughtful, and real.

Offering her expertise as a Creative Director and Branded Partnerships Manager at the likes of Refinery29 and NYLON has given her insight into the world of digital media and what is required of a holistic digital to IRL campaign. The list of brands that she has partnered with is as long as it is impressive, including the likes of: Grey Goose, American Express, Spotify, Smirnoff, Audi, Lexus, Crate & Barrel, Bermuda Tourism, Bumble and bumble., Park Hyatt, Intel, Veuve Clicquot, Pernod Ricard, and Rockefeller Group (to name a few).

Music

As you know, Amy is a storyteller across many mediums, and as you will learn, she’s a sucker for a good art project, thus enters her music career, or safer to say, “serious hobby.”
Songwriting has been her savior, crafting gentle melodies into fully realized musical experiences to sift through her past, present, and future. She works with a network of vastly talented musicians and friends to record her little tunes and even occasionally plays out at beloved NYC venue Rockwood Music Hall (stage one is her favorite).

Her music is admittedly hard to categorize, but let’s call it “folk pop” for the sake of simplicity. She has produced two original albums and one EP of covers.

I'll sing you songs When
you aren't around

Amy Virginia's first album. Here, every song is a love song, whether it's about a boy, her mother, Herman Melville, or the ocean. It's an album of firsts. The first time playing with a band, the first time feeling confidence as a musician, the first time falling in and out of love.

Sheet music

A collaboration between musical artist and longtime friend, Anna Louise Hoard, Sheet Music is a compilation of songs that range from Beyoncé to the Beatles to a behind the scene youtube video of Stevie Nicks. Recorded shortly after Amy came out as bisexual, Sheet Music is a celebration of the love, platonic or romantic, that exists between two women.

not us

Not Us is what Amy wrote in the after math of a sexual assault. After having kept the experience entirely to herself for a year, she realized that by keeping it in, it was beginning to define her in ways that would ultimately harm her. Not Us was written to contribute to an existing dialogue about assault and rape culture. It ranges from angry to apologetic, broken to triumphant. And you can read more about it in this article Amy wrote for Bust.

Theatre

As a writer and performer, Amy Virginia has presented works of original, devised theatre at venues across Manhattan, including at Little Theatre, LaMama, The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, TinyDangerousFun, and Fresh Ground Pepper. Her first full length play, On Fonts, ran at Cloud City in Williamsburg in 2014, and her second play, The Michael Show, about her experience growing up with a brother with down syndrome, ran at The Tank in 2016. As a performance artist, Amy "has a gift for storytelling that can transform [a] theatre," and "is captivating [in] her ability to embrace being fully present." (Stage Buddy review)

As a collaborative artist, Amy has performed and participated in work at the Incubator Arts Project, 14th Street Y, Dixon Place, Triskelion, HERE, The Drama Bookshop, Brooklyn Lyceum, The People's Improv Theatre, Brooklyn Navy Yards, Housing Works Bookstore Cafe, The Brick, South Oxford Space, and The New Whitney Museum.

Theatricality and her unique form of storytelling is present in all of the work that Amy does, from branded activations to influencer casting, from music composition to inclusive queer activism, and beyond. It is what makes her a viable force to be reckoned with.
